I was surprised this week when I finally got around to watching the final episodes of Jekyll and realized that the assistant is portrayed by none other than Michelle Ryan of the new NBC show, Bionic Woman. The assistant role is that of a strong young woman who helps Dr. Jackman control Mr. Hyde when Tom is no longer able to.

Speaking of strong women, Dr. Jackman’s wife, Claire, is a very strong woman, and that fact is more obvious due to the adversity she must face finding out her husband has an evil side. In fact she encounters several surprises in these final two episodes that make her look at life in a new way.

If you haven’t taken the time to watch this series yet I highly recommend you find it online, rent it or buy it. James Nesbitt is excellent as this split personality and Mr. Hyde is deliciously fun as the evil one you’ll learn to love.

This was one of the creepier episodes because of how understated it was, slowly moving toward what seems to be the first coming of Mr. Hyde.

First the writings of Dr. Jackman to his assistant that cause her to quit her job. Second the incident with the ice cream and the refusal of his wife to talk about it later.

This led to Hyde’s seeking revenge on the thug who publicly humiliated his wife by beating and perhaps killing him. It was a nice touch to have the young partiers laughing at his bizarre behavior dancing around the body, until they saw his vicious attack.

Who knew how hard it would be to flush a bloody ear down the toilet?

Very clever the way this episode was formatted, going back and forth between current time, when Dr. Jackman awakens with blood all over his shirt, and events that occurred the night before while Hyde was locked into a basement with Dr. Jackman’s wife and her boyfriend.

Dr. Jackman had forced the key to the basement door down the throat of the boyfriend so Hyde couldn’t free himself, but once Hyde discovered that fact, it really seemed that he would perform his first kill in order to extricate the key. Mrs. Jackman was hiding in the basement and she knocked him out when he was about to kill the boyfriend.

When he came to, he was chained up and Claire was holding the key. She and Hyde had a humorous conversation about whether or not she was married to him and was he cheating when he admitted that he does a lot of screwing around. She asked him if he used condoms and he said “he makes me”. She made the mistake of putting the key in her mouth to swallow it and then Hyde got hold of her and laid a kiss on her that looked more like a human vacuum and, sure enough, he was able to retrieve the key from her mouth.

These scenes were interspersed with scenes of Dr. Jackman awakening the next morning under a tree outside the house with blood all over his shirt, insisting to the police that he had killed someone. When he saw the boyfriend walking around unharmed, he assumed he must have killed his wife.

Back to the basement, where Hyde is about to free himself. Then the basement door is knocked down and the evil organization head, Benjamin, and his minions run down the stairs. Benjamin proceeds to smile as he tells Hyde what will happen to him after they get him back to the laboratory. Little does he know that Hyde has a knife, a really big knife, and with one brief back-and-forth stroke, Hyde slashes Benjamin’s throat. For a moment there is no indication of injury except the widening of the man’s eyes, then he puts his hands to his throat and it immediately starts spurting blood all over Hyde and he dies. Just like in The Wizard of Oz, when Hyde looks to the head of the minions for their next move, Hyde is told “I never liked him anyway.”

So Hyde escapes to the woods just outside the house and soon falls asleep. After Dr. Jackman is taken to the police station, insisting he killed his wife and should be locked away, the minions pick him up and take him to van which contains his wife, tied up, and her boyfriend who apparently is part of the evil organization.

We can only hope that Jackman can find a way to free himself and Claire because somebody has to take care of the kids. Stay tuned.

They say it’s the little things that matter most sometimes. I’ve found that to be the case with Jekyll.

The way the doctor’s eyes glaze and become bloodshot when the change is about to occur and he tells his assistant “He’s coming” in that ominous tone.

The way he bares his teeth that reminds me of the clown from Stephen King’s It.

The freaky smile.

It gave me a creepy feeling of deja vu when Hyde, tied up in Jekyll’s laboratory, met Katherine, the new assistant, and interviewed her in Hannibal Lecter-Clarice Starling (Silence of the Lambs) fashion; and then again when he was asleep in the chair and Katherine was on the phone with her back to him and only the audience sees when he raises his head in Michael Myers (Halloween) style.

In addition to doling out the pain, Hyde also has a sense of humor. I didn’t expect to have so much fun.

It seems he likes having a place to come home to and doesn’t want proof of any crimes he might commit. Once he has proven himself harmless and he has been released from his bonds, Hyde tells Katherine,”As long as the lights and cameras are on, you’re safe. Lights out – you’re dinner.”

After awakening in a strange motel room to find a hooker in his bed, Jekyll walks outside and leaves a message for Hyde on the dictaphone, “For once, one bloody time can you tell me where you parked?”

Even the man who says he owns Hyde admits “You are the fastest, smartest, most powerful man on Earth. And you’re British, so you’re funny, too!”

I was surprised how much I liked this one. I mean, James Nesbitt? But he is really good at making me believe these are two completely different people, supposedly Hyde is 2 inches taller and his hairline is higher. I know one thing, Hyde really enjoys hurting people and he has a joy for life that poor Jekyll or, in this case, Dr. Jackman, does not. But then, Jackman is actually concerned about his newfound dark side while Hyde is trying to take over Jackman’s life completely.

Take the first visit by “cousin Billy” to see Jackman’s wife and kids. She was charmed by this man who looked remarkably like her husband but with more life in him. At first, when Jackman found himself in his vehicle after the visit, we thought Hyde might have killed his family, was relieved that had not happened, but from the smile on his wife’s face, and the fact that she had apparently not heard Jackman because she was in the bedroom, I’m thinking Hyde might take them not by force after all. Jackman better get reconciled with his wife quick before she falls for this other guy who apparently loves to play with the kids.

Then there’s the black van that’s following him and the man who says he is Hyde’s owner. Well Hyde got out of that bar really quickly and I don’t think he informed Jackman about the visit via the dictaphone they use to communicate with one another.
