Leave it to Bones to make the traditional Christmas episode not so traditional.

First, since her father, portrayed by Ryan O’Neal, is in prison as is her brother, spending a traditional Christmas together seems to be an impossible task. But Booth convinces Bones that it is the right thing for her to pull strings and make it happen. Seems there’s a trailer available for conjugal visits and all they need is for the prosecutor who handled his case to recommend its use. One minor glitch: she wants Bones and Booth to find some mistletoe and kiss.

In the meantime, the corpse of the week is, you guessed it, Santa! Well, not actually, but this guy had his name legally changed to Kris Kringle, and he worked as a Santa, though some of his money came from his pickpocketing skill. It was good to see David Deluise working, haven’t seen him since Stargate: SG1, even though he was the killer this time.

So Bones goes out and gets mistletoe and puts it up in the office and the kiss goes off with no issues, unless you think it’s an issue that both Bones and Booth had smiles on their faces when it was all said and done! The prosecutor recommends the trailer for the use of Bones’ family, and they are all able to get together: Bones, her brother, their dad, as well as her brother’s family. Unfortunately, a Christmas tree is not allowed. At the last minute, Booth calls and tells Bones to open the blinds and, to the delight of Bones’ nieces, they see that Booth and his son, Parker, have set up a Christmas tree, lights and all, outside the trailer. That completes the tradition and we leave everyone truly enjoying their holiday.

It’s amazing how fast I can go through my dvr’d shows with the baseball championships going on. I noticed my DVR was recording something and it looked like it should have been Prison Break but, no, when I played it back it was baseball! So that’s an hour I was able to quickly erase.

Then I looked at the next day’s scheduled recordings and Bones wasn’t even listed! So I went to the guide to confirm Bones wasn’t on and, lo and behold, another baseball game was scheduled. If only it was the good old days when I was a kid and the Cincinnati Reds were beating everyone – Johnny Bench, Sparky Anderson and even Pete Rose – ah, the memories!

So this week I may find I’ll have some time on my hands to do something other than watch tv – how refreshing! Hope it doesn’t last too long or I’ll go crazy because, after all, tv is my life!

It’s almost certain the series is not getting picked up because the star of the show, Christina Cox, was on Tuesday’s Bones, not just portraying a rider of a male “pony” in a sexual role playing community, but was this week’s killer. Glad to see she’s moving on. She portrays a private investigator on Blood Ties and sparks fly when she teams up with the local, hot vampire.

It sounds cold and scientific, but the banter between the characters more than makes up for the over-my-head scientific talk that confuses Booth to the point of amusement. Booth being a down-to-earth cops and robbers type of guy keeps the action going as Tempe accompanies him on field investigations, where she sometimes gets carried away with her martial arts training.

There are enough side characters to keep things interesting as well as a subplot about Tempe’s past and family. You’ll enjoy this if you like humor with your murder mysteries.

Starts on Fox 9/25

I liked that show so much I watched the entire series in reruns when the SciFi Channel ran it in the early 90s. Funny how shoddy some of the scenes were, with microphones hanging from the ceiling and bad dialogue but it was campy fun! I still hope it’ll come back again, whether as a remake or more reruns, and one day I plan to attend their annual convention held in New York, perhaps even before the main star, Jonathan Frid, passes on!

My next foray into the world of vampires was Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, with my favorite being Spike, he of the British accent and peroxide hair. The progression of Buffy’s relationship with him was fun to watch, and that’s where we met Eliza Dushku as the evil slayer (later she was in Tru Calling, another of my favorite shows).

Angel, a spinoff of Buffy starring David Boreanaz (Bones), followed the action of Buffy’s true love in Los Angeles, where he led a team of investigators of the supernatural, including Alexis Denisof and Amy Acker.

My latest vampire drama is Blood Ties, on Lifetime but definitely not your normal woman-in-danger show, which follows private investigator Vicki Nelson as she and her newfound friend, Henry Fitzroy, who happens to be a 450-year-old vampire, help cop Mike Celluci solve supernatural murders and mayhem. The love triangle creates a steamy backdrop to the action of chasing, and sometimes catching, different supernatural beings each week. It’s a fun, guilty pleasure I highly recommend. If you like it enough, you might want to try out the Blood Books novels on which the show is based. Sundays on Lifetime

Last week’s new episodes of Bones and Criminal Minds were pre-empted due to backlash from the Virginia Tech tragedy. The Bones episode was to be about a murder on a college campus and the Criminal Minds episode was about a serial killer targeting women on a college campus. I’m still investigating whether or not they will air these episodes or at least post them on the station websites so hardcore fans can watch them. It’s the least Fox and CBS can do!

The one good thing about the Bones episode was that the rerun was one I hadn’t seen from earlier in the season and it was so good since it showed the beginnings of the relationship between Angela and Hodgins while also referencing the relationship between Booth and Cam ending followed by showing how much Booth cares about Bones and saving her from the pit in which she and Hodgins were buried.

I first met Trevor Eve as the dashing criminal investigator in “Heat of the Sun”, a PBS Mystery mini-series, also starring the wonderful Susannah Harker (from the wonderful British mini-series Ultraviolet). It was set in 1930’s Nairobi and involved all sorts of criminals, from murder, arson, and drug-running, to blackmail, banditry, and slave trading. I highly recommend it.

But to stick to the topic, Trevor Eve stars in BBC America’s Waking the Dead and it’s 6th season starts on Monday night. It is set in present-day England and the team he heads investigate cold cases involving anything from boxing to skulls to gold ingots and even a Nazi ceremonial dagger. While they investigate they often come into contact with the underbelly of London society. Try it out if you enjoy shows like Bones, Cold Case, or any of the CSI’s.

I didn’t expect to like this show so I was happily surprised when it started out by portraying a girl who experienced a bad childhood and had to escape to her own Emerald City to cope and became a smart, tough, rebellious young woman who learned to get by no matter what. Think Bones (from Bones) meets Leather Tuscadero (see below), with childhood memories of the death of her mother on par with the tragedy experienced by Bruce Wayne. Turns out the building she dreamed of as her Emerald City is actually a place where a drug company has a secret floor of bodies hanging from the ceiling being kept alive by artificial means. As for the meaning of the title, she DOES feel pain but since her body slowly heals itself she has to learn to KILL the pain. Definitely worth a watch!
