This episode was all about family.
Neela’s cousin, Jaspreet, is visiting, running from an arranged marriage. Jeanie Boulet returns to the ER after a very long absence when her son takes a fall in gym class. And Pratt faces some tough decisions.
We first find Sam getting involved with a triathalon training group her new friend has introduced her to. She tells Gates she’s trying to get “out there”. Gates says he had a dream last night and Sam was in it - I’ve been hoping they might get together. Later,
Sam’s new friend asks her out and she accepts. I wonder if they’ll ever burden her with her wayward child again.
Neela runs into the orthopedic surgeon, played by Charles Esten, the supervisor from Stanford on The Office, and he tells her she’s now working for him - I’ve been hoping she would move on so Gates can too.
Pratt gets all dressed up for a meeting with the hospital board discussing his qualifications for the job of Chief. Anspaugh doesn’t see that Pratt has done anything for the hospital without prompting from Luka and Pratt gives notice. Dr. Daniels, played by Robert Gossett of The Closer, recommends Pratt take some leadership courses and stick around awhile.
Jeanie Boulet returns to the ER when her son, Carlos, falls in gym class and adds to Pratt’s angst when she asks to see his supervisor. After testing the boy, Pratt gives her the news that her son has AIDS and needs a brain biopsy to determine his treatment. When Carlos starts convulsing, Pratt steps up and expedites the medications needed against Dr. Skye’s warnings but it works out and she congratulates him. You can see where this might be going, right?
Jeanie’s visit has Haleh telling juicy gossip of long-gone er staffers. Doug and Carol love Seattle and their twins are now in 3rd grade, and Carter might come home for a visit in the spring.
After Pratt sees the pictures Jaspreet took on her tour of the er he realizes he is part of the er “dysfunctional family” as Frank puts it, gives support to Jeanie and her ex-husband, then makes the decision to stick around the er for awhile and not jump ship as he has planned. I’m glad because we just lost Luka and don’t know when, if ever, Abby will return. We were told in this episode that she’s been on leave for a couple of weeks already.

Who is the actress that plays Jaspreet?
Bill, I wish I could tell you. I’ve researched it briefly and the name is posted nowhere found easily. She’s in this week’s episode of ER so scour the credits as they come up and let us know if you figure it out.
