Viva Laughlin Out, Amazing Race In

Lloyd Owen has been in a couple of shows I liked a lot:  Monarch of the Glen and The Innocence Project, both on BBC America.  Unfortunately, his latest venture, Viva Laughlin, has been pulled after only 2 episodes and on November 4, Amazing Race will be taking its’ timeslot.

Viva Laughlin is a murder mystery that wants to be a musical…I think.  The original series on which it was based is Viva Blackpool, a British series.  I watched a couple episodes of that show and I think they did their own singing, whereas Laughlin had a soundtrack that the singers, at most, just accompanied.  There was no lack of known actors on Laughlin, including Madchen Amick (Twin Peaks), Hugh Jackman, and Melanie Griffith.  Even Tom Cruise’s cousin, Ethan of Lost, had a major role in the second (and sadly now last) episode.

So I’m looking forward to Amazing Race returning, arguably the best of all the reality shows, and I mean just that, people tend to argue about it.  But I enjoy seeing the exotic locales as well as the bickering and sometimes quite strategic gameplay.  One of the best moments on all the AZ’s was when Rob & Amber realized that you don’t have to complete all the challenges as long as you’re willing to sit it out for some penalty time.  They were able to talk a few teams into doing just that and they finished a few notches higher in the running that day!
