Private Practice - In Which We Meet Addison, a Nice Girl From Somewhere Else - Review
Published Date: October 1st, 2007Category: Veronica Mars, Taye Diggs, Grey's Anatomy, Tim Daly, Amy Brenneman, New Shows, State of Mind
I’m devoting myself to comparisons lately, it seems, first Torchwood and now Private Practice.
Even though I don’t watch Grey’s Anatomy, I had been looking forward to this new series for some time due to the cast: Tim Daly, Taye Diggs, Amy Brenneman, Paul Adelstein, and Chris Lowell, whom I knew as Piz on the recently-cancelled Veronica Mars.
I first noticed how closely the office setup reminded me of that on State of Mind, a new summer series starring Lili Taylor as a quirky shrink who works in an old house, renovated into office space for a hodge-podge of professionals, from a child psychologist to a lawyer, all of whom have their personal issues that easily spill over into their professional lives. These thirty-somethings are a close knit bunch and I find the series to be a breath of fresh air, and I hope it will be renewed for another season.
By contrast, when Addison arrives at the Oceanside Wellness Group in Los Angeles, it is a surprise to everyone except her close friend, Naomi, who failed to tell her partners that she had asked Addy, a neo-natal specialist, to join the group. That, in and of itself, causes strain as poor Addy has to prove herself worthy. Fortunately, a patient comes along with an emergency requiring Addy to step up and work at her highest level of competency, not knowing if her decisions will save a woman and her baby or kill them. All works out in the end and she is brought into the fold.
