Will the New England Patriots be able to overcome the distraction of this week’s events and play well against the San Diego Chargers? That’s the question everyone has been asking all week, ever since the Pats were caught videotaping the New York Jets’ offensive or defensive signals during the game last Sunday.
The League has come down hard on them, some say not hard enough, fining Bill Belichick $500,000 and the Patriot’s organization $250,000 for violating league policy. In addition, the team will lose some draft picks. If they reach the post-season, their first-round selection will be forfeited; if they miss the playoffs, it will be their second- and third-round picks that are forfeited.
I think, as do some others, that they may have gotten some benefit from the videotaping, but that basically the Patriots are a great team because of the skills of their players, not the ill-gotten info about their opponent’s upcoming plays. That doesn’t mean they’ll be able to roll over the Chargers because they are hungry for this win. If for no other reason, they want to see New England lose in retaliation for last season’s playoff game when the Pats beat San Diego 24-21, ending their season with their only loss at home all season.
