Imagine being the last of your race, your kind, the only survivor of a long-gone planet, travelling through time and space alone, except for companions, one after another, who join you for an ever-too-brief time in relation to all time, because you never age.

And then imagine that your arch-enemy, the last of their kind, the war with whom caused your planets and all others of your kind to become obliterated forever, has found a way to become less evil, more compassionate, choosing to evolve with human DNA, to attempt to create a peaceful environment where both species can exist.

Well that was the scenario in which the Doctor found himself in this particular episode. Sure, the pig slaves had cheesy pig masks, and the Daleks looked like a cross of R2D2 and the Robot from the original series Lost in Space, but there was a moment there when it actually looked like the human hybrid was going to convince his fellow Daleks to put down their arms and form a truce.

But, after all was said and done, the Daleks’ true colors shone through and they ended up destroying their former leader because he was no longer a pure Dalek. And, in so doing, ended up getting 2 of the other remaining pure Daleks killed in the crossfire. Then the final Dalek fled somewhere into time when the Doctor offered his help.

And poor Martha, falling for the Doctor, perhaps not realizing that no one can capture the his heart completely. He has his memories, and the bitterness that comes with outliving any friends he’s ever made along the way. So, Martha, enjoy the ride, because it will soon end.
