Saving Grace is about a woman, a cop, an alcoholic, who finds herself one night driving down a lonely road and takes a turn a little too fast, spinning out, hitting a pedestrian. She runs to help him, tries to dial 911 but gets no cell, administers CPR, apparently to no avail. That is when she says “God, please help me.”
No sooner than the words are out of her mouth, a man behind her says “How can I help?” Grace asks him to call for help and he says “You already did.” He introduces himself as Earl, sent by God, and proceeds to spit tobacco into his beer can.
That’s when things really go bad.
Grace pulls her gun and tells him to get “On your knees, nutcase” and Earl brings out the really big guns, night turns to day, and a gigantic set of white wings appear at his back.
He takes her to the top of a mountain and explains that he can’t spend all his time with her, he has places to go, people to help. She’s still quite drunk and sobering a little at a time. The wind almost buffets her off the cliff , then she finds herself back on the road, before she got in the car in the first place.
Above is what I saw on tnt.tv, the sneak peek at Saving Grace, but is what NOT the beginning of the episode. That consisted of Grace and her partner, played by Kenny Johnson, formerly of The Shield, having sex quite animatedly all over her living room. Quite an eyeful for the first scene!
While the interest level was quite high throughout the show, I doubt I’ll continue to watch it for several reasons. It might take her a really long time to become a person I’m even interested in watching week after week. It’s not because I think she should believe in God, but because I think she should be sober long enough to be able to do something likable at all. I’m surprised she’s able to keep a job with all her rogue activities.
And her friend, by contrast, played by Laura San Giacomo, was such a sad sack, possibly to make us think that Grace at least is a happy person.
Watch at your own risk, remembering this show is not meant for little children. Consider it along the lines of Nip/Tuck with a conscientious, I guess.
