Anne’s day doesn’t start out too well. First, her dreams involve slime in the ice box that quickly oozes all over the kitchen floor, followed by all her colleagues ganging up on her, insisting she is not married.State of Mind Cast

When she finally wakes up she realizes she is late for an appointment and she hurries to her marriage counselor’s office only to catch her husband and the counselor in flagrante.

From there things only get worse: after discussing it with all her colleagues she realizes that, but for one, they all knew!

She starts having visions of strangling her patients, and of her husband during sessions. She realizes that she can’t continue therapy with her patients when she is such a wreck. She finally lays the law down to one couple who are so selfish not to be willing to give an inch and when she’s done, they realize they need to work a little harder to make it work.

In the meantime, James, the child therapist of the group, is having trouble helping a Russian teenage boy, Victor, and the family who adopted him. They appear to be a class-conscious couple who don’t have time to deal with a problem child. When Victor runs away from home and goes straight to the therapist’s house, the police think the worst. But James is able to get past that and to the truth: that the couple just doesn’t know how to cope with a special needs child, but that they believe they can be strong enough to devote the time needed to Victor.

Those are just 2 of the stories in this first episode, but it has left me wanting to see more. Lili Taylor is great as Anne and James is a crazy man with a good heart. I’m not sure how well I’m going to like Taj or Cordelia, but I like the new guy, Barry White, played by Davon Gummersall.

When I first heard about this show, I quickly added it to my recording schedule. Lili Taylor, one of the princesses of indie, doing TV? It just had to be good. And it was. I know that I’ll be watching this show for some time.
