Sanctuary Review - Webisodes 1-4

Do you believe in the unbelievable? I think that’s what SciFi is all about right? It is why Helen Magnus has brought Will Zimmermann into the fold as her new apprentice. But what exactly does she do? Does she help outcasts? Or does she just have a collection of oddities in a zoo? Is that humane treatment?
I found the boy to be horrifying because he appears to be such an innocent, and yet he feeds as a starving creature would, ravenously! Just the sound is enough to make your hair stand on end.
I was glad to see David Hewlett (Dr. McKay on Stargate:Atlantis) is part of this endeavor. I look forward to seeing more of him.
There is lots of darkness so the little spots of humor are extremely welcome. I wonder if Robin Dunne was chosen because he looks so much like Daniel Jackson from Stargate:SG1.
So we find out that the boy has a creature within him that feeds on fear, or at least those who are in fear. A number of the people who created Sanctuary are from Stargate and thus the theme of a creature within. It’s interesting that the boy himself attempts to exert some control over the creature but only the lack of fear in the victim can stop it from feeding.
I almost didn’t recognize Peter Deluise when he came on the screen, he has lost so much weight over the years and is he buff! He got to work with some really cool special effects. And, about that tall, bald guy: I wonder if he isn’t Ashley’s father. Soon after I had the thought, he confirmed it.
When Ashley called the kid “The Ghoul” at first I thought she said “The Go’uld” as in the creature within from Stargate:SG1. And it does look like one.
Is it possible that Helen and John aren’t immortal, just time travelers? But that doesn’t explain how Helen could have a daughter Ashley’s age.
I think it’s pretty ironic that Will is a psychologist with terror dreams of evil creatures even at his age and finds himself apprenticing for a monster hunter. I had to laugh when he told Alexi that he wasn’t afraid of The Ghoul because “there’s no such thing as monsters” and Helen’s manservant (a monster) chose that moment to arrive.
I can’t wait for the next batch of webisodes to come out – this is a real trip!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this cool endeavor. I hope it’s a sign of things to come. I’m willing to shell out the $1.99 per episode if the quality continues!
What a great review. Thank you for linking this in my LJ. I am a sci-fi junkie and will definitely take a few and review some of your other reviews of shows. There are a lot I have missed and your writing style seems to sum up the shows nicely.
