I wasn’t expecting to like this as much as I did! This fits Donovan much better than did Touching Evil.
It’s a little Alias, a little Psych (but much more substantial), a little Miami Vice: this spy has been left out in the cold, dumped in Miami, Florida, his old hometown, just the place he was running from when he joined the CIA!
Westen’s friends are informing on him but at least they’re on his side, helping out when they can. And Sharon Gless looks great, despite (or maybe because of) the wig she wears.
Priceless moments:
- trying to lose a tail while driving your mom to the doctor’s office
- getting attention from your handler only by sending him a pipe bomb with no explosives in it
- the gay art dealer coming on to you saying he wants to show you his “greco-roman nude wrestling statues”
- knowing the easiest way to break into a safe with a fingerprint reader is to use the fingerprint left from the last entry because nobody ever cleans their safe
- after hitching a ride from a stranger, being distracted by the visor that wouldn’t stop falling down
I was hoping the guy whose car he borrowed might become a sidekick!
Some things we learned:
- never underestimate the girlfriend of the guy who almost broke your hand
- what a McGyver Michael is: not only knowing how to get one over on his neighbor by breaking through the wall, but being able to grab the right tools and save the kid from being kidnapped
Now where do I know Gabrielle Anwar from? Is she really Irish? She’s actually English and became well-known after starring with Pacino in Scent of a Woman but I vaguely remember her from John Doe.
Excellent cast, including Bruce Campbell, who I understand has a big following who have been awaiting his return to a regular series. It’s too bad Ray Wise was only a guest star because he’s a favorite of mine.

One Response to “Burn Notice Pilot Review”
I fell in love with the show with the whole discussion on the small bones in the hand and the number of hard surfaces in bathrooms.
