I was surfing the internet and found several videos of the young pole vaulter from Newport Beach, California named Allison Stokke. She came into the news a while back when she broke some pole vaulting record.She gladly did interviews on television and with the press and her face and pictures of her pole vaulting were everywhere. Then she started to get nervous about all the attention she was getting. I mean, here she is, in high school, barely 18, and all she’s interested in is getting to Berkeley where she can continue in her sport, and she finds out all sorts of websites have been created just to post her videos and pictures. So she asks folks to lay off and even one of her first unofficial websites can be found here, having shut down.
But the latest news coming out about this issue is that, despite the fact that they say they are so distraught, the family continues to talk to the press and they have set up their own website where you can purchase anything from coffee mugs to t-shirts to puzzles in her likeness!
So I guess the question is: how much is too much attention?

It’s become ridiculous — they perhaps know it the whole thing is not going away, so the Stokke may have come to the realization they might as well milk it.
They are only pouring fuel on the fire from what I see, and bloggers like myself and others aren’t helping…
Well, as you can SEE…. it’s quite obvious why she’s getting all the attention! I have to agree it sounds a bit hypocritical, the way the family has changed their stance on marketing their daughter. When money is involved I bet a lot of parents don’t think too hard about throwing their kids to the wolves.
I doubt if the family has any interest in making money from this. It’s not right to make those kind of assumptions. I just hope that all the unwanted attention does not turn Allison away from the sport. She was not at her best this past Saturday at the California High School Track and Field Championships. Did she purposely “tank” to avoid MORE unwanted attention? I hope not. Hang in there Allison and be the best you can be!
The Stokke family isn’t the ones selling the mugs and T-shirts. Get your info straight.
