Sunday night on TV Land; to rerun on Nick at Nite
Where do I begin? This awards show is an annual event for Tv Land, their 5th, and will honor the likes of Lucille Ball, the mini-series Roots, The Brady Bunch, Taxi and Hee Haw. This year’s show will be hosted by Kelly Ripa. In addition to all the award winners mentioned below, Willie Nelson and The Judds will perform a salute to Hee Haw, the cast of Heroes will be there and, of course, what better reason to watch any event than our very favorite “Cuchi cuchi” girl, Charo!
Carol Burnett will present the Legacy of Laughter award to Lucy and Desi Arnaz, Jr. in honor of their mother’s work over the many years she brought smiles to all our faces. I particularly enjoyed her movie “Yours, Mine and Ours” with Tim Matheson and Henry Fonda, but many loved her in the still-running I Love Lucy series.
For Roots, John Amos, Todd Bridges, LeVar Burton, Louis Gossett, Jr., Cicely Tyson, Leslie Uggams, and Ben Vereen will be on hand to accept the award for this highly-acclaimed mini-series from 1977.
Almost the entire Brady Bunch will be in attendance for the presentation of their award, with Florence Henderson, Ann B. Davis, Maureen McCormick, Barry Williams, Christopher Knight, Mike Lookinland, and Susan Olsen appearing. I believe most children from the late 60’s to today grew up with The Brady Bunch. The show originally ran from 1969-1974 and runs in syndication on Tv Land.
Roy Clark will be in the house to accept the award for Hee Haw, one of America’s longest running music programs, that brought laughter into our living rooms as we watched the original hillbilly characters perform in side-splitting skits, and according to The Futon Critic, featured such performers as “Dolly Parton to Louis Nye and from Garth Brooks to Rip Taylor” and “was a perfect mixture of sketch comedy and amazing musical performances“. I particularly enjoyed Grandpa telling us “What’s for Dinner?” – he made downhome food sound mouth-wateringly delicious. Good thing it ran around suppertime! This show ran from 1969-1971 and made a comeback in the early 90’s. Reruns can be found on CMT.
To accept the award for Taxi, one of the better comedies to have come our way in the late 70’s, Jeff Conaway, Tony Danza, Danny DeVito and Judd Hirsch will be on hand. Running from 1978-1983, the start of careers for most of them as well as Marilu Henner, Andy Kaufman, Christopher Lloyd, and Carol Kane, to name just a few. Unfortunately I cannot find this show running anywhere, please leave a comment if you happen to know where to watch this show.
I say, pop the popcorn, dvr this show and watch all the parts you’re interested in watching. If nothing else it’ll be interesting to see what some of these people look like these days! And it should be fun for a laugh or a moment of reminiscing. Enjoy!
